Bucktown sits directly north of Wicker Park, and while the two get grouped together constantly, they feel different on the ground. Bucktown is more residential — calmer side streets, more single-family homes, and a commercial spine along Damen Avenue rather than one busy intersection.
The housing tells the neighborhood's history. Original frame workers cottages sit next to brick two-flats, gut renovations, and some of the most ambitious new-construction single-family homes on the North Side. That range is part of what makes Bucktown interesting to shop — a vintage condo and a $2M+ new build can share a block.
Damen Avenue carries the shopping and restaurants, and the neighborhood has held onto its institutions: The Map Room has been a neighborhood institution since long before craft beer became mainstream, and Club Lucky has been serving old-school Italian since long before most of its neighbors arrived. Holstein Park anchors the northern half with a pool and field house, and the 606 trail — the Bloomingdale Trail, formally — runs straight through the middle of the neighborhood.
Getting around without a car is very doable. The Damen and Western Blue Line stops serve the southern end, buses run on Damen, Armitage, and Fullerton, and the Clybourn Metra station is close enough to matter on the north end. Drivers like the quick access to the Kennedy.
Bucktown strikes a balance between residential streets and easy access to restaurants, shopping, and transit — which helps explain why so many residents move within the neighborhood rather than leave it.
Do you need a car in Bucktown?
Most residents don't. The Blue Line, buses, the 606 for biking, and walkable retail on Damen cover daily life. Drivers do get easy Kennedy access, and parking is somewhat easier than in Wicker Park.
