The Gold Coast has been Chicago's signature luxury neighborhood since the 1880s, when the city's wealthiest families built their mansions along Astor Street and Lake Shore Drive. Remarkably, much of that era survives: the Astor Street District holds block after block of landmark rowhouses and mansions — including the Charnley-Persky House, an early collaboration of Louis Sullivan and a young Frank Lloyd Wright — and walking these streets remains one of the city's great architecture experiences.

The neighborhood's housing tells a layered story: the historic mansions and rowhouses on Astor, Dearborn, and State; the grand vintage co-ops of East Lake Shore Drive facing the water; high-rise condos added across the decades; and walk-up condos on the side streets that offer a more attainable way into the neighborhood than its reputation suggests.

Daily life is dense with landmarks. Oak Street Beach sits at the neighborhood's front door, the designer boutiques of Oak Street run west from Michigan Avenue, the restaurants around Rush Street stay busy year-round, and Washington Square Park — Chicago's oldest park — faces the Newberry Library at the southern edge. Lake Shore Drive and the lakefront trail frame everything to the east.

A car is fully optional: the Red Line stops at Clark/Division, buses run on Michigan, State, and the Drive, and the Mag Mile, River North, and Old Town are all walkable.

The Gold Coast offers what no other Chicago neighborhood quite can: landmark residential architecture, the lakefront, and the city's most established address, from grand co-ops to vintage walk-ups.

Gold Coast FAQ

Do you need a car in the Gold Coast?

No — the Red Line at Clark/Division, dense bus service, and walkable access to the Mag Mile and the lakefront make a car optional. Garage parking is available in most high-rises, typically at a price.

What types of homes are in the Gold Coast?

Landmark mansions and rowhouses in the Astor Street District, grand vintage co-ops on East Lake Shore Drive, high-rise condos, and vintage walk-up condos on the side streets.

What is the Gold Coast known for?

The Astor Street historic district, East Lake Shore Drive's co-ops, Oak Street Beach, the Oak Street designer shopping corridor, and its standing as Chicago's most established luxury neighborhood.

Gold Coast vs. Streeterville: what's the difference?

Both are lakefront and walkable to the Mag Mile. The Gold Coast is the historic residential district north of Oak Street, with landmark mansions and vintage co-ops; Streeterville is east of Michigan Avenue, almost entirely high-rise, with Navy Pier and Northwestern's campus.
