Lakeview

Wrigley Field, the Southport Corridor, Northalsted, Belmont Harbor, and one of the city's deepest condo markets.

Lakeview is one of Chicago's largest neighborhoods, and it functions more like a collection of distinct districts than a single place. Wrigleyville surrounds the ballpark, the Southport Corridor runs boutiques and restaurants past the Music Box Theatre's marquee, Northalsted carries one of the country's most established LGBTQ+ entertainment districts, and the eastern blocks face Belmont Harbor and the lakefront. Each section has its own personality; all of them share the trains and the lake.

Wrigley Field is the obvious landmark — a century-old ballpark woven directly into a residential neighborhood, with Gallagher Way hosting markets, movies, and concerts year-round, not just on game days. The Music Box Theatre on Southport has been showing films under its starlit ceiling since 1929, and the restaurant and bar count across the neighborhood is enormous.

Housing skews vintage and condo-heavy: brick walk-ups, courtyard buildings, greystones, two- and three-flats, and condo conversions make up most of the inventory, with high-rises along the lakefront and a competitive market for the limited single-family homes near the Southport Corridor. It's one of the deepest condo markets in the city, which keeps options open at most price points.

Few neighborhoods are easier to live in without a car. The Red, Brown, and Purple Lines stop at Belmont, Addison, Southport, Wellington, and Paulina; express buses run down Lake Shore Drive; and the lakefront trail, Belmont Harbor, and the parkland along the water are all immediately accessible from the eastern blocks.

Lakeview offers scale: more housing options, more restaurants, more transit stops, and more ways to live than almost any neighborhood in the city — from a vintage one-bedroom walk-up to a lakefront high-rise to a single-family home off Southport.

Lakeview FAQ

Do you need a car in Lakeview?

No — this is one of the easiest neighborhoods in Chicago to live in car-free, with five L stops across three lines, express buses on Lake Shore Drive, and walkable retail in every direction. If you keep a car, expect permit parking and game-day restrictions near Wrigley.

What are the different areas of Lakeview?

Wrigleyville around the ballpark, the Southport Corridor on the west side, Northalsted (historically known as Boystown) to the east, and East Lakeview along Belmont Harbor and the lakefront. Each has its own feel, but they share the same transit and lake access.

What types of homes are in Lakeview?

Mostly vintage condos — brick walk-ups, courtyard buildings, and conversions — plus two- and three-flats, lakefront high-rises, and a limited, competitive supply of single-family homes, especially near Southport.

Lakeview vs. Lincoln Park: what's the difference?

Lincoln Park, directly south, is generally more expensive with more single-family homes. Lakeview is larger and denser, with deeper condo inventory, Wrigley Field, and more varied price points. Both share the lakefront and the Brown and Red Lines.
